Eight Tips for Landing your First Job as a Junior Web Developer

Before your interview…

1. LinkedIn is your best friend

To search for job offers:

  • LinkedIn is THE leader in recruitment platforms. LinkedIn is your CV.
  • Using your Facebook profile can be good for word of mouth. It costs nothing to inform your network that you have completed your training in web development and that you are looking for a first experience in a company (internship and/or job). You don’t know yet, but you probably know someone who knows someone who could help you find your next job. Why miss out?

2. Yes, “Soft Skills” are also very important!

The best quality that you can value in front of a recruiter is your curiosity! It shows you ‘re ready to explore information, and you’re not afraid to get out of your comfort zone.

Being a web developer does not only mean ‘aligning lines of code on a computer,’ you will have to take an interest in your client and his project to better understand his expectations.

Knowing how to be flexible, open-minded and “solution oriented” (able to provide solutions for all types of situations) are also great qualities for a web developer. The idea is not only to do your hours of code without adding value to your work.. You will have to be able to break your routine and go look further, learn new technology on your side, be strong of proposal, to invest in the missions in the broad sense of your company or your customers.

3. Do not underestimate any internship experience

Internships are great opportunities to learn on the job. They require you, as they say, to “get your hands dirty” to get started!

Working on your own on a concrete personal project is also a very good idea and will have a very positive effect when you present it to your recruiter (no need to create THE most innovative project in history, but just have something that you have yourself created to show it is already very good).

It is well known, in the end, whatever your degree, what has the most value on your CV are your experiences.

4. Prepare for your interview, it’s mandatory

Find out about the company for which you are applying (history, latest news, employees, values, etc …) and about the position targeted (the manager, the team, the missions …).

Resume your CV by orienting it for the position (but remaining honest!)

Think about what else you could bring to the business: Are you passionate about what they do? Do you have a great network? You know very well the country of origin of the company … these little things that will differentiate you from other candidates 😉

On the day of the interview…

5. There’s no point in putting immense pressure on yourself on the big day (even if you have to be very focused)

Take care of your arrival, punctuality, print your CV and your cover letter in several copies, everything must be impeccable.

All of the above can be prepared in advance and will allow you to reduce your stressful state on D-Day, so you can focus on the interview itself.

6. Your aesthetic must be impeccable 😉

Be careful to be perfectly presentable on the big day (adapted look, impeccable hygiene …). Contrary to popular belief, you shouldn’t neglect your appearance. A good impression on all levels is always preferable.

7. Smiling and being kind will make the interview more human.

There’s always a good reason to smile, look for it!

After the interview…

8. Do not hesitate to follow up with the recruiter if he does not come back to you

Web development in Pakistan is very popular industry. Usually the employer / recruiter defines the next step at the end of the interview: we’ll call you back this week, we’ll see each other on that day, our story ends there…
