We will explain to you how we optimized the SEO of our own WordPress site.
It is a practice, some would say an art, intended to attract visitors by displaying one’s website as high as possible in the list of search engine results. For some it is a bad joke, for others it is hell. Indeed, WordPress was not built to do digital marketing: it is a simple blogging platform. However, this ease of use makes it the most widely used CMS these days. And for us, SEO is essential, regardless of the platform.
Before you begin, it is important to select the right assessment tool. Our choice fell on moz Internet: it analyzes your website point by point and gives you a score out of 100, while listing the SEO problems encountered.
>>> This is where “Crawlers” come in
Small drawback: Alexa only analyzes once a month. Still, it can be handy to see some of your changes in real time. This is where “Crawlers” come in. A Crawler is a tool that crawls an entire website to analyze it. It identifies pages with too little content, titles that are too long, pages without descriptions, etc. As part of this project, we programmed our own Crawler to meet our SEO needs in real time. This allowed us to test our corrections quickly and without interference.
On the menu, too long titles and meta-descriptions!
The first SEO optimization point identified concerned page titles that were too long. In order to be more attractive to the user of a search engine, a page must have a title that will not be truncated by the said engine. To shorten our 159 article titles, we exported them manually with our Crawler and then adjusted one by one. Given the nature of the task, it is impossible to automate it. Once this was completed, we ran a database script to automatically reinsert the changed titles into the database.
We then tackled the page descriptions. Also known as “meta descriptions”, these are displayed at the bottom of search results. In our case, some of our articles did not have one! Be careful, this can quickly become problematic when we are talking about hundreds, or even thousands of pages. How then to overcome this problem? Through automation. We wrote a database script that automatically selected the start of each post to use as a page description. This technique has the advantage of making the search result more attractive.
“When there is no more, there is still! “
Eventually, several other issues had to be resolved manually. For example, links that pointed to pages that had moved over time had to be changed one by one. Other examples, some pages like Christmas cards simply had to be deindexed. Still others lacked content; it was therefore necessary to create some.
All this is less exciting, of course, but still essential in terms of SEO . A multitude of small fixes that require special attention. This is why we recommend continuous SEO monitoring rather than a massive operation every 6 months. The SEO is like guarding the entrance of his own store; it is not by cleaning once a year that we attract customers!
