HTML TAGS: ALL ABOUT THE H1 TAG

As an organizational factor within a web page, tags also play a considerable role in your natural referencing (SEO). At the top of the list is the H1 tag, whose dominant position ensures it a decisive function in search engines’ eyes. But what should you know about the H1 tag?

What is an H1 tag?

Briefly, the H1 tag is, in fact, the main title of a web page. As mentioned in a previous article, the order that characterizes the tags from H1 to H6 determines their importance by search engines. Therefore, their impact on SEO will be different. As the H1 tag acts as the title of a page, it is, therefore, the one that will have the most weight in the SEO of the page.

Difference between the H1 tag and the title tag

Although the H1 tag is often identified as being the title tag of a site, it is not: the H1 tag always corresponds to the main title of a page, while the title tag is the one that appears at the top of the screen to your left and located in the top bar of your browser. If it is possible that these two tags are identical, it is, however, possible to qualify them.

Be aware that it can be a good thing not to choose the latter option because if a user clicks on a result provided by search engines, they will expect to arrive on a page with the same name. Moreover, the fact that the same keywords are repeated will have a positive effect on your SEO.

However, you should know that a title tag has the advantage of being longer (between 50 and 70 characters), which can still be an advantage if you want to have more latitude regarding the insertion of keywords.

What are the rules to follow when using the H1 tag?

Put only one tag per page

There was a time when some copywriters only included H1 headlines on the various pages of their website, claiming that these had a higher value than other SEO tags. Even though this is true, integrating several H1 titles is not necessarily the best strategy to employ.

Indeed, your text should always follow a structural logic, which assumes that you should have one main subject per page and subheadings to divide the paragraphs. Therefore, limit yourself to one H1 tag per page. Since this is your page’s title, it should be located at the very beginning of your content.

Choose relevant keywords

As your H1 tag is the one that influences your SEO the most, integrating your main keyword inside it will be of utmost importance. In the same vein, be precise in choosing your words: the page’s subject must be unequivocal. As an added tip, strike a balance between a catchy headline and an informative headline.

Bet on a short H1 tag

Additionally, you should ideally limit the length of your H1 title and keep it no longer than eight words. A shorter title will make your page’s specific topic more visible to search engines and Internet users looking for specific information.

Develop a unique tag for each page

Not only does using the same tag for multiple pages create competition between them, but it also implies that your H1 tag will inevitably lack precision. As such, it cannot accurately reflect the main subject of your page or indicate to the Internet user whether the page in question corresponds to the object of his research. Also, it will deprive you of the possibility of highlighting several keywords. So let your imagination run wild and make an effort to develop a tag for each page of your website.
